Customer Gallery - Hawaiian Quilts

We ask our customers to send us photos of what they make from our patterns, or in Nancy's classes.  We want everyone who visits our web site to enjoy and appreciate what our friends and customers have accomplished.  If you have a photo we can post in our Gallery please send it, in any format (see below for details).
Mahalo  to everyone who has been willing to share their beautiful work with us.

A Touch of Hawaii.  Nancy Smith chose a variety of patterns from Pacific Rim Quilt Company and Elizabeth Root's 1984 book "Hawaiian Quilting Patterns" to create this unique quilt.  The center medallion is from the Flowers That Never Fade pattern using the heliconia and orchids, other PRQC patterns used include:  Lilies of the Valley, Woodland Lei, Royalty & Hula, and Tropical Fruit & Nut.  Nancy's sparkling use of color creates movement and unity.  Quilt measures approximately 80" square.  Click on names above for patterns.

Flowers That Never Fade with Dragonflies, by Karen Esterholdt.  Karen chose the torch ginger and anthurium flowers to place in her vases.  The dragonflies and pretty double binding create additional interest.  Click here for pattern.

Flowers That Never Fade, by Jeanne Plude.  "Just wanted to send you this photo of my first wall hanging.  It took me almost a year of off and on quilting.  I have made other pillow size quilts.  I love your patterns".  Jeanne says it has been 12 years since she moved away from Hawaii, and the Hawaiian quilts help her keep a part of Hawaii with her.  Click here for pattern.

Silversword, by Bonnie Ouellette.  "By the way, it was not until I went to email you that I realized that I had not cut out the little scoops on the silversword.  I was sick because that would have made it even prettier.  I thought about trying to do it now, but think it would be too scary."    (We think Bonnie's quilt is stunning just as it is!)  Click here for pattern.

Sea Turtles & Dolphins by Shirley Taylor.  I love seeing the fabric that people choose to interpret the images of the quilt designs!  I look at this quilt and feel that I am right in the water with the dolphins and turtles.  Click here for pattern.

Sea Turtles & Dolphins.  Melinda Greene.'s second Hawaiian quilt, still in progress.
"I fell in love with the dolphins and had it appliquéd in one week...it's addictive.
The dolphin fabric has mum's on it, but looks like seaweed after I cut it all up."  Click here for pattern.

Lilies of the Valley with a custom designed border by Shirley Taylor.  We are so glad people don't stop with making just the pattern, but go on to expand the possibilities.  Click here for pattern.

Send us your picture to fill this empty spot!

Woodland Lei.  Appliqué by Marilyn Kalinowski, quilted by Lori Kelley.  This quilt won First Place in a quilt show and has led Marilyn to teach Hawaiian quilting at her local quilt shop.  If you look closely you will see that Lori did not echo quilt, rather she used free-flowing leaves to fill the spaces around the appliqué.  A very effective and lovely treatment. Click here for pattern.

Woodland Lei by Ilse Osier.  "I made the quilt out of batik fabrics and love the low contrast and muted color scheme."  Even with the low contrast colors I would term the quilt 'dramatic'.  I hope the web picture does it justice. Look below for even more versions of Woodland Lei.   Click here for pattern.

Woodland Lei by Pat Luther.  Pat chose the Woodland Lei block pattern to make her 18-1/2" square, hand appliquéd and hand beaded quilt.  Click here for pattern.

Turtle Bay by Bonnie Ouellette.  She purchased the background fabric with turtles swimming all over it on the Big Island of Hawaii, thus the name.  Bonnie reports that she loved doing the appliqué but hated the echo quilting.  That hasn't stopped her though, she has more Hawaiian quilts in the works!  Click here for pattern.

Woodland Lei.  Marie Blecha. reports it took her 'nearly a week' to complete the appliqué and then she hand quilted this lovely quilt in 'only a few days'! (She certainly works faster than I!)  She did not mark the quilting lines, rather 'eyeballed' the distance between appliqué to achieve the effect she wanted.  Click here for pattern.

"Woodland Lei was my first allover Hawaiian appliqué.  I used 2 Hoffman hand paints, and I chose not to put on a border.  I fell in love with the pattern when I saw it..."--by Carole Casadonte.  Click here for pattern.

Torch Ginger.  Made by Mae Gilliland, one of Nancy's students.  A traditional choice of navy blue on white makes a bold statement.   This is one of the Tropical II series, click here pattern.

Torch Ginger.  Melinda Greene.'s first Hawaiian quilt.  She turned the block pattern on-point then added a border of her own design.  A student of Nancy's, she says:  "We were supposed to start small but hey WHY???
I made some mistakes but learned from them."  This is one of the Tropical II series, click here pattern.

Fruits & Nuts in Season, by Marie O'Kelley.  69" x 50", hand appliquéd and hand quilted.  This quilt won 2nd place in the traditional appliqué category at Marie's state fair.  Congratulations!  The border of this quilt makes the blocks just jump right off the quilt.  Click here for the Tropical Fruit & Nut pattern.

Hawaii goes Africa!  Khay Norris. modified our Lychee pattern as a gift for her daughter.  Odd, she says "(I) definitely will never do one on black again."  But we are glad she did this one!
This is one of the Tropical Fruit & Nut series, click here for pattern.

Plumeria by Colette Cook.  "My first Hawaiian wall hanging.  Not only did I thoroughly enjoy your pattern but when I requested some technical assistance via e-mail, I received a prompt, helpful, and informative response which helped me on my way.  I learned a lot from this project and I can't wait to begin another larger project.  I am obviously hooked on the art of Hawaiian Quilting."  Thank you Colette for sharing your wonderful quilt and your nice comments!  This is one of the Tropical III series, click here for pattern.

Polynesia.  Jacky Thomas' study in high and low contrast Bali batik fabrics.  Approximately 125" x 100".  Whew!  Click here for patterns.

Banana Tree, by Bonnie Ouellette.  Bonnie now has three quilts in our Gallery.  And I understand she is working on another.  Click here for pattern.

Banana Tree.  Charlotte Scholberg's 21" small quilt is hand quilted with gold silk thread--the same thread she used to do the appliqué.  (This is the block pattern included in our Banana Tree pattern.)

Maile.  Lee Howarth. added a wonderful touch with the rippled border on her small quilt.  This is one of the Tropical Floral series, click here for pattern.

Poho poho in progress.  Carolyn Fessler's work-in-progress.  Her border is only partially appliquéd, but she couldn't wait to share her progress so far  Ulu, Angel's Trumpet & Orchid are Pacific Rim Quilt Co patterns.  The pattern in the upper right is Elizabeth Root's Woodrose Leaf pattern.
The PRQC patterns are from the Tropical II series, click here for patterns.
