High quality hand dyed, 100% cotton, 44" wide fabrics are wonderful for needleturn appliqué. The Bali Fabrics we carry are of two kinds: 1. Batik, fabric which has had a wax resist applied to create a pattern. The fabric is then dyed and finally the wax is removed to reveal the design. Our suggestion when choosing to work with batiks, is to wash the fabric 1-2 times in very hot water, and then another 1-2 times with your normal laundry. These repeated washings will remove any residue of the wax from the batik process and make the fabric easier to needle. 2. Polos is the Balinese word for background, or without pattern. This fabric is hand dyed in the same fashion as the batiks, only without a resist applied. There is no pattern on Polos, or background fabrics. The interesting interplay of colors on Polos lend a wonderful quality to Hawaiian and appliqué quilts. Because there has been no wax applied to the Polos, the additional washing recommended above is not necessary. Of course, we always recommend you pre-wash any
fabric in your water to test for color fastness.
Each photo shows approximately a 20 inch square of the fabric.
